Audiologists Industry Chatter: Did you hear? Your audiologist career is in-demand
When you first decided on a career in audiology—likely for an abundance of reasons—you probably were aware that it’s a fairly in-demand occupation. But were you aware of just how in-demand an audiologist job is?
In 2015, audiology was dubbed one of the best careers in America courtesy of Time Magazine’s The Answers Issue (based on data from Careercast.com and the Bureau of Labor Statistics). Ever since, however, the profession has continued to grow, steadily increasing in numbers and rapidly expanding into new sectors of the industry.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the audiology field is only going to continue to boom. In fact, you can expect a dramatic increase of jobs within your field in the next few years—an anticipated 34 percent by the year 2022, and overall growth of 16 percent from 2018 to 2028. What exactly does that mean? Audiology is one of the fastest-growing careers in the United States.
And while many think that your career is punctuated by standard visits with geriatric patients, the fact of the matter is, audiology is growing so rapidly because the career itself is expanding into entirely new places.
Part of the credit for the growth of the audiology field coincides with our aging population due to medical care that has helped us increase the average life expectancy by as much as 5 years since 2000. Further, the number of people who are over 65 is expected to double by the year 2050. This means there will be plenty of patients who could benefit from audiologists’ expertise.
Still, the opportunity for audiologists to help and heal is growing for others reason, and much of that has to do with the number of young people at risk for hearing loss or related issues due to earbuds and personal devices, as well as loud music at gyms, clubs, concerts, and more, according to the World Health Organization.
Further, the field continues to grow as audiology carefully makes its way into new settings. According to the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association, 73.5 percent of audiologists are employed in health care settings, but beyond that, about 47.3 percent are in nonresidential health care facilities, 25.1 percent are in hospitals, and about 1.1. percent are in residential health care facilities.
The opportunities, of course, are limitless, and the field continues to prove itself to be a complex and varied one that extends beyond the traditional ideation—and it’s only going to continue to thrive, grow, and expand.
